V Edition 2022 – Marine ecosystems under pressure: current issues and future challenges in pollution science
The 2022 edition of the Spring School was held on November 21 and 22, with the theme Marine ecosystems under pressure: current issues and future challenges in pollution science, being coordinated by the PPGCMT visiting professors Dr. Tommaso Giarrizzo and Dr. Laercio Lopes Martins. This special edition, entitled “INSPIRE – International Spring School in Marine Science”, was organized in response to the need for a better understanding of the impacts of pollution on marine ecosystems and coastal communities. The event was organized by the PPGCMT/UFC, with the collaboration of professors and students, with the technical support of the Atlantic International Research Center (Air Centre) and the collaboration of twelve other graduate programs from Brazilian universities.
There were two main topics chosen for this event, the first day on the fate and impacts of plastics on marine ecosystems and the second day on the investigation of oil spills and their impact on marine ecosystems. With a hybrid format, in the morning there were online sessions with six presentations each day by leading international researchers (from Canada, United States, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, and Turkey), with the presence of more than a thousand participants from more than 50 countries, and oral presentations by students in the afternoon (Side Event). Also in the afternoon, there were in-person activities involving 30 students (Students Training) with field activities and laboratory practices.
In addition to the coordinators, the organizing committee was composed of professors from the PPGCMT Dr. Fabio de Oliveira Matos, Dr. Luis Ernesto Arruda Bezerra, Dr. Antonio Geraldo Ferreira, Dr. Paulo Henrique Gomes de Oliveira Sousa, Dr. Rivelino Martins Cavalcante, and Dr. Tallita Cruz Lopes Tavares Normando. The student committee was composed of the master’s and doctoral students, Luiza Costa Mello and Gabrielle Melo Fernandes, respectively, in addition to the undergraduate students LaisÉrikaGranjeiro do Monte and Tiffany Laura JanuciTeles de Mendonça.
